1. (Bot.) An herbaceous cruciferous plant (
Isatis tinctoria
) of the family
Cruciferae (syn.
Brassicaceae). It was formerly cultivated for the blue
coloring matter derived from its leaves. See
isatin.

It is now superseded by indigo, but is somewhat used with
